Reading is one of the things I want to make more time for, and fall evenings give me a good reason to do it. A comfortable spot, a book I’m excited about, and some time set aside can make an ordinary night at home feel like something to look forward to.
For this cozy reading night, I’m starting with a blind-date book. There’s something fun about choosing a book without immediately judging the cover, then opening it and finding out what I’ll be reading. It gives the evening a little surprise before I’ve even reached the first page.
Whether you have a wrapped book waiting to be opened, a novel on your Kindle, or a paperback you keep meaning to start, here’s how to put together a simple fall reading night at home.
Start With a Book You Want to Read
I enjoy romance and thriller, so I want reading time to feel like something I’m choosing because I’m interested in the story. You don’t need to pick a book just because it looks seasonal or appears on every fall reading list.
A blind date with a book is a cute way to make the choice feel like an occasion. If yours comes with clues about the genre or story, take a moment to read them before opening it. Then settle in and give the first chapter a chance.
Your current book works just as well. The point is to make time to enjoy it, even if you’re halfway through and only have one chapter left in you tonight.
Make Your Reading Spot Comfortable
You don’t need a dedicated reading room. A corner of the couch or a comfortable spot in bed is enough. Get into pajamas or something you can relax in, grab a blanket, and make sure you have enough light to read comfortably.
Keep what you need within reach: your book or Kindle, a drink, and a bookmark if you’re reading a physical book. A few minutes of getting settled can save you from getting up repeatedly once you’ve started.
If you want the space to feel more like fall, use a blanket or mug you already love. There’s no need to buy a whole new setup to enjoy an evening with a book.
Give the Evening a Clear Starting Point
“I’ll read later” is easy to say and easy to forget once the evening gets going. Choose a point in your night when you’ll sit down with your book—after dinner, after your shower, or once you’ve finished the things you need to do.
You can make a drink or finish your skincare first if those steps help you settle in. Keep it simple enough that preparing for the reading night doesn’t take up all the time you meant to spend reading.
Let Reading Be the Plan
When you’re used to squeezing a chapter into the end of the day, setting aside time specifically for reading can feel different. You don’t have to wait until everything else is finished or make it through a certain number of pages for the evening to count.
Try twenty or thirty minutes to start. Put notifications on silent and let yourself stay with the story. Some nights you might want to keep going; other nights, a chapter is enough.
My Simple Fall Reading Night Checklist
- Choose a book you’re excited to open.
- Change into comfortable clothes or pajamas.
- Settle into a spot with a blanket and good reading light.
- Bring a drink and anything else you need within reach.
- Set notifications aside and give yourself time to read.
Make It Something You Look Forward To
A cozy fall reading night doesn’t have to be a special event. It can become a small part of the week that you protect because you enjoy it.
For me, that’s the appeal: making space for a book and letting the evening have a slower pace. The blind-date book adds something fun to this particular night, but I want to keep making time for reading long after the wrapping is gone.
If you’ve been meaning to read more, pick one evening this week and decide what book you’ll start with. You already have the most important part of the plan.
