One thing about me: I genuinely love my routines. My morning routine helps me feel grounded, productive, and more like myself, so I do not want to completely abandon it just because I am on vacation. At the same time, I am not interested in following such a strict schedule that the trip stops feeling relaxing.
For me, the answer is not trying to recreate my exact routine from home. It is choosing a few parts of it that make the biggest difference in how I feel and building those into my vacation mornings.
Here is how I stay on routine while traveling while still leaving plenty of room to enjoy the trip.
I Choose a Hotel With a Good Gym
If I know I want to work out while I am away, the hotel gym is something I look at before booking. I check the hotel website and photos to see what equipment is available, how large the space is, and whether it looks like somewhere I would actually enjoy working out.
Having a good gym inside the hotel removes so many excuses. I do not need to find a nearby gym, pay for a day pass, or figure out transportation. I can wake up, change, head downstairs, and get some movement in before the rest of my day begins.
My vacation workouts do not have to be as long or structured as my workouts at home. Sometimes I lift, sometimes I do a shorter workout, and sometimes I simply walk on the treadmill. The goal is not to follow my usual plan perfectly. It is to move my body because I know it helps my mood and energy.
I Pack the Parts of My Skincare Routine I Actually Use
I love skincare, but vacation is not the time for me to bring every product in my bathroom. I pack the essentials I know I will use morning and night, especially cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and a few treatments that make the trip feel a little more special.
Eye masks are always an easy addition. I can put them on while I am getting ready, working on my laptop, or having breakfast in the room. They take almost no extra time, but they make a normal morning feel more like a self-care moment.
I also try to keep everything visible once I unpack. If my skincare is hidden inside a toiletry bag, I am more likely to rush through my morning and forget something. Setting it out neatly by the sink makes the routine feel easy and familiar.
I Give Myself a Slow Start
At home, I am naturally a morning person, and that does not change when I travel. I love opening the curtains, letting the light into the room, and taking a few minutes before I immediately start doing things.
That slow start might include drinking something cold, putting on my eye masks, checking my plans for the day, or simply enjoying the room. I do not need a complicated morning routine to feel grounded. Even 10 quiet minutes can help me start the day in a way that feels intentional.
I Set Aside a Small Window to Work
As a full-time content creator and business owner, completely disconnecting is not always realistic. I also know that ignoring everything for several days can make me feel more stressed because I am thinking about what might be waiting for me.
Instead, I choose a specific window in the morning to check in. I might answer important emails, handle a few time-sensitive tasks, or plan content while I have my coffee. I focus on what truly needs my attention rather than turning it into a full workday.
Giving work a clear beginning and end helps me enjoy the rest of the day without constantly checking my phone or laptop. Once that small block is done, I can close my computer and head to the pool knowing I handled what mattered.
I Make Getting Coffee Part of the Routine
Getting coffee is one of my favorite little vacation rituals. It gives me a reason to leave the room, walk around the resort, and ease into the day. Sometimes I bring it back to work for a bit, and other times it marks the end of my productive morning and the beginning of vacation mode.
This is also why I like choosing a hotel with coffee available on-site or nearby. A routine is much easier to keep when it fits naturally into where I am staying.
I Plan for the Morning I Want Before the Trip
Most of the work happens before I leave. I pack workout clothes and sneakers I know I will wear. I bring travel-size skincare, eye masks, and anything else that helps me feel put together. I confirm the gym hours and check whether the hotel has a coffee shop or breakfast options.
These are small details, but they prevent me from having to make a bunch of decisions once I arrive. When everything I need is already there, following my routine feels simple instead of like another obligation.
I Keep the Routine Flexible
The biggest thing I remind myself is that a vacation routine should support the trip, not control it. If I stay up later than expected, have early plans, or simply want another hour of sleep, I adjust. Missing one workout or changing the order of my morning does not mean the routine is ruined.
Some mornings might include a full workout, skincare, breakfast, coffee, and a little work. Other mornings might only include eye masks and coffee before heading straight to the pool. Both count.
Staying on routine while traveling is really about keeping the habits that help me feel my best. A little movement, a little self-care, a focused work window, and a good coffee give my vacation mornings enough structure without taking away from the reason I traveled in the first place: to relax, enjoy myself, and come home feeling refreshed.
